10 Video Nasties Fans Once Paid A Fortune For (That Now Cost 99p)

Zombie+Flesh+Eaters+(18) Video Nasties for 99p? I can go one better than that. I can bring you several video nasties for a mere penny according to current prices on Amazon.co.uk (albeit they might be used DVDs). Most of my teenage years were spent trying to track down the movies on this list as, were most of my peers' (well solely the boys I knew - the girls were too busy having pregnancy scares). We would speak of the Nasties in hushed, reverent tones, swapping tales - "I know someone who watched Cannibal Holocaust and he went insane and didn't leave his bedroom for a year!" I actually vowed I would never watch Cannibal Holocaust for fear of it sending me mad. Of course, whenever it came out I was chomping at the bit to watch it and I now regard it as one of the finest nasties. Back in the day of old school Nasties, seriously huge wads of cash were paid for these films. I think the great apocryphal tale of The Beast in Heat swapping hands for hundreds of pounds illustrates the lengths cult cinema fans would go to get these movies (and The Beast in Heat is no great cinematic masterpiece). My friends and I used to pay £30 for a VHS tape with three films on it. The quality of the tape was a 6th generation bootleg which only added to the forbidden thrill of it. Everything changed one day when I grew up. I was perusing the titles in my local video store and there it was - Cannibal Ferox - bold as brass on the shelves. Heart beating fast, I immediately rented it and I found myself befuddled by the film, a boring and dull jungle adventure. The gore pieces - the only reason why anyone would want to watch this piece of crap - had been excised and only husk of a film remained. There then followed in its wake, a slew of re-released nasties, butchered by the censors, which hugely disappointed nasty hounds who had been waiting decades for these films to be made legal. The smart ones bought multi-region DVD players and Region 1 DVDs. Region 1 DVDs of the Nasties are actually quite coveted and can still command some surprisingly high prices on amazon uk. It seems that owning the Uncut version of a nasty is a valuable thing. On the other hand, as I discovered in my research, cut Region 2 DVD versions are practically being given away as you can see from my list. With harder and meaner movies being made these days (A Serbian Movie, Antichrist), a great deal of the nasties look rather silly and cheap in comparison, and this could account for their low price, too. Whenever fans got to watch them, they found out how trashy some of the video nasties are - this may account for some of the devaluing of the Nasties DVDs. But true nasty fans will always stay loyal to the 72 DPP list and will be tickled pink at the bargains below. Just keep repeating: it's only a penny! Only a penny! Only a penny.....

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
