10 Video Nasties That Shouldn’t Have Been Banned

Don’t Look In The Basement was a no budget, independent horror movie inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s “The System Of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether”. It was originally passed with a single cut for cinema, but nonetheless faced the fate of being banned in 1984. However, the fact that Don’t Look In The Basement was re-released in 2005 uncut with a 15 rating points to it being another mistake made by the BBFC - putting a film on the list of banned movies when it really shouldn’t have been there.

Don’t Look In The Basement was another film banned by association because its marketing was completely stolen from Last House On the Left. The famous tagline of "to avoid fainting, keep repeating: it’s only a movie, it’s only a movie…" was invented by the makers of Last House On The Left to sell how shocking the movie was, and Don’t Look In The Basement shamelessly stole it for their own posters, even failing to remove the "the makers of Last House On The Left warn you…" at the beginning of the famous tagline. Thus, when Last House On The Left was banned in 1984, Don’t Look In The Basement went down with it, despite Don’t Look In The Basement being a notably gore-free movie.
