Batman is the World's Greatest Detective, and yet few of the live-action adaptations really focus on him doing some actual detecting. Although it was flirted with in Batman v Superman, Affleck's solo movie is a chance to build on that and really explore Batman as detective. If that's the route it goes down, then few villains are better suited than The Riddler.

He's an equal to Batman in intellectual terms, but has a crazed desire to prove that he can beat the Bat, while giving his enemy clues to help him foil his plans if he can. It's all about the game to the Riddler, and he loves playing with Batman, laying various traps and, of course, coming up with increasingly elaborate riddles for him to solve.

As a villain who wants nothing more than to be superior to Batman he poses a unique threat, and they could well utilise him in a similar manner to the Arkham games: the character laying riddles and clues all over for Batman, while he has other enemies to get physical with. The Riddler is one of the greatest Batman rogues, and hasn't appeared since that Jim Carrey monstrosity in Batman Forever; the time is right to try and crack this particular riddle once more.
