10 Villains Who Need To Appear In The MCU
4. Nightmare
Potentially one of the most interesting names on this list, Nightmare is an omniscient being who draws his power from dreams. Although effectively powerless in the waking world, Nightmare can haunt the nightmares of whoever he chooses, transporting their astral bodies into his Dream Dimension, whereupon they are subjected to all manner of horrors.
Marvel Studios have been transparent about their desire to weave multiple genres through their movies, and having already tackled spy thrillers, high fantasy, heist movies and World War II serials, why not try to lace the next Doctor Strange movie with a little bit of horror. Disney aren’t really in a position to go all torture porn with the franchise, but they could still create some frightening, Scarecrow-esque imagery within the constraints of a 12A or PG-13 certificate.
The idea of a villain who operates under the same MO as Freddie Krueger is pretty terrifying, and it’s exactly what makes Nightmare a great foil for more psychological and cerebral heroes like Doctor Strange, or could even make him an interesting parallel to more physically gifted characters like Captain America. It’d definitely be weird, but Marvel tends to be at its best when its pushing the boat out and experimenting with new ideas.
Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has already expressed interest in exploring the character further down the line, so don't be surprised to see Nightmare showing up sometime soon.
