10 Vintage Film Special Effects That Make A Mockery Of CGI
2. The Chest-Bursting Scene - Alien (1979)
Without question, the most memorable scene from the original Alien was the infamous chestburster scene where a baby xenomorph explodes out of the chest of Kane (John Hurt) as his crew watches in disbelief. If you werent impressed with the monster SFX effects in Ridley Scotts sci-fi horror classic than you should have your head check. Over thirty years and the effects still look way better than the majority of films you probably went to see in the last year. The trick shot required a fiberglass chest piece placed over Hurt, tubes to spray fake blood, a single hand puppet for the alien, and wires to help the alien whoosh across the table. We should all shudder to think what would happen if that film had been made today. The alien would be an ill-conceived mess of video game level CGI and the cast would all be in their early 20s. Side note; the only actors to know about the chestburster were Yaphet Kotto and William Hurt, the rest of the cast wasn't told...and their horrified reactions are quite genuine.
