10 Ways Deadpool 2 Is Actually A Huge Disappointment
7. Vanessa
Vanessa was a crucial part of the first film. Not just in a narrative sense, she also offered a worthy foil to Deadpool's shenanigans and served to anchor the emotional arc of the film. So it's more than a bit disappointing that one of the film's most obvious indulgences of cliche comes right at the start, with the "fridging" of Vanessa.
She is killed off for the sole purpose of it affecting Wade as a character. To make matters worse, the film clearly thinks it's being bold and original with this surprise death. When in fact, it's indulging one of the oldest tropes in the book. The opening credits that come right after her death offer phrases like "Did they just do that?", as if the audience should be shocked.
On top of all of this, Vanessa appears to Wade several times throughout the film in a water prism of sorts and Wade's visions become the primary motivators of the plot. It's nonsensical and becomes extra irritating when the film decides to hang all of its emotional resonance on a final water prism sequence that is played completely straight.
Vanessa deserves better than this.
