10 Ways Star Wars Episode 8 Will Probably Rip Off Empire Strikes Back

10. Escaping A Secret Base

J.J. Abrams loves Hoth. There were echoes of this icy locale in The Force Awakens' Starkiller Base, as well as in his first Star Trek film; when Kirk got lost on an ice planet, had to fight a big alien beasty, and was eventually saved by Spock Prime. This chain of events bore obvious similarities to the scenes between Luke, the Wampa and Han Solo at the start of The Empire Strikes Back. Now that Abrams is producing a Star Wars sequel, it seems likely that he€™ll encourage director Rian Johnson to make some nods towards Hoth in Episode VIII as well. Perhaps the film will begin with another base-under-siege sequence, to pay homage to the AT-AT infested battle that wowed audiences during the opening act of Episode V. There are a few ways in which Johnson could reimagine this battle to make sure it€™s not a complete rehash. Maybe this time around the Resistance will be the ones attacking, trying to obliterate The First Order€™s new hideout before Snoke and co. can fully recover from the destruction of Starkiller Base. It€™d certainly be an interesting switcheroo to see the baddies on the back foot at the start of a film. And if Johnson really wants to mix it up, maybe this secret base-destroying battle doesn€™t need to take place on an ice planet at all.
