10 Ways That Movies Will Change In The 2020s
1. More Synergy Between TV And Film Franchises
The first major piece of event TV of the new decade, the finale of epic fanservice superhero crossover Crisis On Infinite Earths, made waves with an additional surprise cameo when TV's The Flash Grant Gustin shared the screen with his big screen counterpart Ezra Miller.
On the one hand this is just a fun little nod to another DC adaptation in an event which was full of them. But equally, in establishing the shared multiverse space now theoretically occupied by the film and TV DC universes, it may point the way forward for the relationship between the two media in the 2020s.
Film and TV have always fed from each other in TV spin-offs and movie adaptations. In the 2020s, however, that relationship may become closer than ever, with stories being told back and forth across both in a far more interconnected way than ever before.
As in other areas, Marvel seems to be leading the way here. Shows like Agents of SHIELD never really delivered on the promise to seamlessly integrate in and out of the Marvel movies, feeling instead like fairly standard TV spin-off material, but the studio's new shows for Disney+ may finally do just that.
The Scarlet Witch TV series WandaVision will feature supporting turns from characters from the Captain Marvel, Thor and Ant-Man movies but will also feed into Wanda's central role in the big screen Doctor Strange sequel. Increasingly, therefore, there is a chance that you will be required to keep watching every show to understand the plots of the movies and every movie to understand the plots of the TV shows.
And, as Marvel goes so the rest follow, so don't be surprised to see a similar franchise synergy in, say, the future plans for Star Wars threading elements from shows like The Mandalorian into the movies and back again.
These are just ten ways that movies could be different by 2030 and, if the last decade has shown us anything, then there'll also be many more shifts that we can't yet foresee. What would you like to see change in the next ten years at the movies? Let us know in the comments below.
