Suicide Squad was an unfortunate victim of executive meddling. Scenes were cut or inserted in the eleventh hour and the film's tone was changed late in production.

But the biggest issue that people had with the movie was the fact it contained far less Joker than we were promised. Based on the promotion and trailers, filmgoers assumed the green-haired jester would serve as more than a glorified cameo. Even in the extended cut, the Joker only appears for 12 minutes.

We were meant to see the the tattooed gangster breaking out of jail, killing victims with his crew, and offering his services to the Enchantress. Although the film concludes with Harley agreeing to rejoin the Joker, she chose to stay with the Suicide Squad in the original script.

According to Variety, there were enough scenes of Jared Leto's character left on the cutting room floor to make a whole other movie. The director, David Ayer, admitted that viewers' criticisms about the cackling clown's absence were justified and and he would've made the Joker the main villain if he had another crack at the film.
