There's a lot of trauma associated with being a comic book fan these days; not only do you have to cope with the constant flux of universal reboots, shifting creative teams and more, but also with the threat of seeing your favourite characters brought to life on screen in an undignified manner. With the superhero movie renaissance in full swing, audiences are bracing themselves for an inevitable commercial and critical flop - the proverbial Atari E.T. to hasten the end of Disney's, Fox's and Warner Bros.' cinematic stranglehold on the comic book genre. If you're a Marvellite however, you really needn't worry.

While it's true that the house of mouse's big screen replication of the Marvel Universe has struggled to find its footing over the years, no other adaptation of the comic book medium has managed to attain such universal critical and commercial acclaim in its existence, nor define the genre in such a fitting manner. All of this would've seemed unfathomable back in 2008, yet here we are, third Captain America sequel in hand, marvelling at a universe that is just as fantastical, diverse and rich as the source material it's based off.

By now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has managed to dabble in all the intricate sub-genres of the comic book medium, taking audiences from the murky streets of Hell's Kitchen in Netflix's blistering adaptations of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, to the sub-atomic microverse of Ant-Man and beyond the Milky Way itself in the operatic Guardians Of The Galaxy. These are all remarkable feats in and of themselves, but to bring these stories to life so faithfully and with the nuance they're deserving of is just something else entirely. Frankly, I've never seen it done before, and as Dr. Strange, Black Panther and Luke Cage fast approach our screens one really can't help but pause in amazement at the fact this is all actually happening.

The MCU is a special thing. It transcends the usual tropes of the comic book genre, unifies countless characters under one banner and finally delivers on the revolutionary ideas Marvel laid its first foundations on in the 1960s. Quite frankly, comic book fans have never had it so good.
