6. Explaining The Plot Of The Entire Movie
Some trailers will often serve as convenient 2-minute summaries of an entire movie, such that there's not really much point in actually going to see the film at all. Take the trailer for Cast Away, which presents a compelling set up - a man trying to survive while stranded on a remote island - before completely ruining any and all suspense that the film might otherwise invite. Basically, the trailer waltzes through all of the main plot beats, such as Chuck learning to make fire and adapting to life on the island, and more specifically, the fact that he gets off the damn island at the end. Oh, and the fact that he gets to see his wife again. Oh, and the final shot of the film. It's not like you need to put the hard sell on an inspirational movie starring Tom Hanks; this film will sell itself, so how's about just scaling back a bit and showing the flick and audiences a little more respect? Instead, there's zero doubt about where the plot's going.
