10 Weird Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 80s
9. Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Killer Klowns From Outer Space isn't exactly elevated horror. With that said, it's hard to think of a horror feature that embraces its absurd premise better. With a title like that, you'd expect this dark comedy to be as dumb as possible. In that regard, Killer Klowns fully delivers.
After clown-like extra-terrestrials arrive in California, they capture the locals and encase them in cotton candy cocoons. When the police refuse to help, it's up to Dave, his girlfriend, and a pair of ice-cream sellers to stop the invasion.
For all its faults, Killer Klowns must be commended for incorporating pretty much everything that's associated with clowns. The titular monsters attack with larva-laced popcorn, shadow puppets that come to life, cream pies made of acid, and candy floss composed of blood. The Klowns utilise circus routines into their massacre, including magic tricks, ventriloquist dummies, and trampolines.
Just when it feels like the story couldn't get any more daft, the climax has the ensemble squaring off against a Godzilla-like Klown called Jojo.
It may have a niche audience, but Killer Klowns From Outer Space is a must-watch for anyone with a taste for schlocky parodies.
