10 Weirdest Movies Quentin Tarantino Actually Wanted To Make
3. A James Bond Film Set In The 1960s - Casino Royale
Before Martin Campbell was chosen to direct Daniel Craig's acclaimed Bond debut Casino Royale, none other than Quentin Tarantino was behind the scenes, pitching his own original idea for the film. The story was then the only original Bond novel not to have been adapted to film by main series owners Eon Productions, due to long-lasting difficulties in securing the rights. Tarantino claimed to have worked behind the scenes with the Fleming family, however, and believes this is the reason the filmmakers finally went ahead with making the film.
If this is ringing Star Trek bells, you might also be able to predict that Tarantino's vision of Casino Royale was radically different to anything that had come before in the franchise. Tarantino's version of the film demanded that not only it be set in the 1960s, but that Eon keep Pierce Brosnan on in the role of 007, as he felt he was the ideal Bond.
Quentin set out to make a Bond movie that was driven more by plot and character than huge, colossal set pieces. It would have taken place immediately after On Her Majesty's Secret Service, with Bond in mourning over his - spoiler warning - late wife, marking his romance with Vesper Lynd with an air of tragedy.
Eon Productions showed absolutely no interest in this however, and Tarantino was forced to fold.
