10 Wild Ideas For The Perfect Suicide Squad 2

6. The Suicide Squad Is The Amanda Waller Show

Viola Davis was fantastic as the founder of Task Force X, Amanda Waller, in the 2016 movie, and it’s currently understood that she’s been tapped for Gunn’s sequel, too. This is excellent news: because when it comes to the Suicide Squad, Waller is the star of the show.

A strong (often headstrong) and powerful middle-aged woman of colour in a field historically populated by white men, Waller is an anomaly in US intelligence circles. A former congressional aide who saw her opportunity to increase her political profile by pioneering the Task Force X concept, she’s made director of the programme under sufferance yet proves to be more than smart enough (and ruthless enough) to run the Squad… although she rarely plays by anyone else’s rules.

There are very few characters like this in movies, and none in comics, even thirty years after her creation. Throughout almost every incarnation of the Suicide Squad, Amander Waller - nicknamed ‘The Wall’ - has been the linchpin of the team, the vital cog that makes the machine work. She even memorably faced down the Batman himself, armed with nothing but a bad attitude.

Fundamentally, any Suicide Squad sequel that doesn’t feature Viola Davis front and centre as Amanda Waller doesn’t know what it’s doing.
