10 Wild Ideas For The Perfect Suicide Squad 2
5. The Suicide Squad Needs The Bronze Tiger
The current rumour is that Idris Elba, originally cast to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, may now have been retasked to play the Bronze Tiger in Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel.
Now, there are plenty of incarnations of the Squad that haven’t featured former assassin Ben Turner, codenamed the Bronze Tiger - but arguably the best and most critically acclaimed iteration had the character in a prominent role throughout its entire run.
Waller’s original choice for field leader of the Squad, Turner was passed over for Flag by her superiors, creating the first little sliver of resentment on her part. Amanda believed it to be racially motivated, whereas Turner himself suspected that it was his past as a brainwashed member of Ra’s Al Ghul’s League Of Assassins that lost him the gig.
Whatever the case, the deprogrammed Tiger became one of Waller’s most valuable field agents: a good man who believed he owed her his soul and helped to act as her conscience when her worst instincts got the better of her.
That dynamic is storytelling gold, and having a non-sexual relationship between two people of colour in such central focus is exactly the kind of representation that Hollywood should be all about in the 21st century.
