10 Wildly Unnecessary Movie Sequels That Were Awesome Anyway
2. Fast Five
It may be difficult to imagine now, but the Fast & Furious franchise wasn't always the global behemoth it is today. The fact that it managed to squeeze four films out of essentially Point Break with cars was already impressive enough as it is. By the time the fifth one came around, many wondered what there was left to do in the street racing world, fearing that it had ran out of steam (or rather diesel).
Fast Five went a different direction, completing the franchises's evolution from street racing dramas to all-out action heist films. If you manage to leave all sense of logic, reason and physics at the door, the action here is thoroughly enjoyable and heart-pounding.
This was also the first time we saw Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's uncanny ability to re-energise a franchise, forming a fantastic rivalry with Vin Diesel (both on and off the set). The testosterone-fuelled frenetic action sequences came to set the tone for the franchise ever since, and although the following films kept upping the ante, this is where the Fast & Furious films really switched gears.
