"Here's Johnny!"

Yeah, it really couldn't be anyone else taking this top spot. The monstrous Jack Torrance is the poster boy for a father going mad and trying to kill his family. That's really not the best look there, Jack, is it?

The Shining is one of horror's greatest films, and while the author of the novel it's based on (Stephen King - really, again?) hated the movie, there's no denying that it's a milestone in cinema. Part of what made it so compelling was the utterly terrifying performance from Jack Nicholson as the awful father, Jack Torrance.

For any unaware, The Shining follows the Torrance family as they move into a remote hotel. There, they are haunted by evil spirits who drive the father (Jack) to madness, leading him to try and kill his wife and son.

Part of what makes Jack such a fascinating villain is that while the spirits are responsible for his actions, you can still get a sense that there's a lurking danger behind him. There's talk of a past incident where Jack dislocated his son's shoulder in a drunken rage. This suggests that the spirits were coercing out a side of him that was already there.
