They say that youth is wasted on the young. In poor Caroline Ellis' case, she doesn't even get to waste it herself, instead having her body swapped with that of a geriatric.

Caroline comes to work at the old plantation house of the Devereauxs, an elderly couple rocked by husband Benjamin's stroke. It doesn't take long for her to suspect there's something awfully fishy going on around here as more evidence points towards a sinister hoodoo conspiracy.

The Skeleton Key takes a while to really get going but the end pay-off is among the most unpleasantly dark in modern Hollywood horror. It turns out the Devereauxs are in fact Papa Justify and Mama Cecile, a pair of servants from 90 years prior, who have been using hoodoo to swap bodies with younger people so that they can keep living on.

Unfortunately for Caroline, she's the new young shell for Mama Cecile who's been deliberately leading Caroline down the magic rabbit hole. You see, by screenwriter Ehren Kruger's logic, you can only be affected by the magic if you believe in it.

Waking up as past-70 Mrs Devereaux, Caroline is poisoned in order to cause a stroke, ensuring her silence on the matter. So, from a 20-something with most of her adult life ahead of her to a prisoner in someone else's near-death body. It's solid nightmare material, and helplessly infuriating for the character knowing that someone else is out there living the life she was meant to have.
