On January 1st 2022, the 1926 children's book Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne entered the public domain.

Though the Disney version of the character is still very much the property of the House of Mouse, the original iteration of the beloved character was now fair game.

So, naturally, someone decided to turn him into a slasher villain.

Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey was directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield and hit cinemas in early 2023. It follows Christopher Robin upon his return to the Hundred Acre Wood, where he discovers that his childhood friends have become bloodthirsty killers.

This could have worked.

Had Blood and Honey been self-aware enough about how ridiculous it was, then it could have been entertaining. Instead, the film takes itself bafflingly seriously and attempts to present the honey-obsessed bear as a genuine threat.

Furthermore, the animals are just people in masks! And very clearly so! How was anyone expected to be frightened of Pooh when they could tell he was clearly just some bloke in a rubber suit?

This film failed on every conceivable level and serves as a warning that, just because you can do something, that doesn't mean you should.

Oh bother, indeed.
