10 Worst Movies By The Best Directors

7. The Dilemma - Ron Howard

Steven Spielberg 1941
Universal Pictures

There are some movies that don't try to be anything more than a dumb comedy. Grown Ups, The Benchwarmers, and Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo aren't trying to reinvent the wheel, nor were they ever intended to be classics. They were just thrown together to be mildly entertaining for 90 minutes.

Another film that fits that bill is The Dilemma. This comedy centres around a guy called Ronny, who discovers the wife of his best friend, Nick, is being unfaithful. Ronny knows he needs to be honest with his friend but is also aware that telling the truth will destroy Nick's life.

The Dilemma has every trope you can imagine. Excessive slapstick gags. Sex jokes. Rambling improvisation. Characters unnecessarily murdering animals. Y'know, the usual.

So, when you discover this travesty was concocted by none other than Ron Howard, you are left dumbfounded. Imagine if you learned Christopher Nolan was the director of Hot Tub Time Machine or Sam Mendes was the guy behind Little Nicky. That's why it's so surreal to see the same director who created A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, and Arrested Development devised a comedy of such inadequate quality.
