4. Tommy Lee Jones Two Face/Harvey Dent (Batman Forever)
Oh boy. Where to begin with this one? A lot of people point to Jim Carrey as being the poorer villain in this film, but thats not totally fair. At least Carrey had an idea behind what he was doing he was channelling Frank Gorshin. And besides, in 1995 people employed Carrey for one reason, and that was to be a rubber faced clown. In that regard he delivered, so its difficult to be upset. But Tommy Lee Joneswow. Justwow. Jones is one of the finest actors Hollywood has produced in the time that Hollywood has been a thing. Sadly though for this role, here he took a page out of the Jack Nicholson Joker book and decided to ham it up and turn his performance up to about 17. Admittedly hes not the only one guilty of this (as well see shortly), but he really should have learned from the mistakes of others and given the role a bit of nuance. The biggest problem aside from the fact that he goes absolutely bananas during 98% of the scenes he is in, is that he forgets that his character is supposed to be one of duality. Two Face is one part of the character, and the other is Harvey Dent. Yet it seemed that as soon as they buried his face under gaudy prosthesis Jones could just see the fat dollar signs earned by Nicholsons joker, and figured that his character was just the same thing. He then decided to mimic Nicholsons manic craziness when theyre two completely different characters. Its painful, its exhausting, and more importantly it is a wasted opportunity for one of the finest thespians of our era, to tackle one of the great comic book villains of all time.
