10 Worst Threequels Of All Time

7. X-Men III: The Last Stand

20th Century Fox

Bryan Singer firmly established X-Men as one of the most critically and commercially successful franchises of the early 00's. Singer opted not to return to the series to work on Superman Returns and the director of choice was originally Matthew Vaughn who would go on to do stellar work in X-Men: First Class, but he dropped out and Brett Ratner was given the reigns.

And what a mistake that turned out to be. Ratner, at this point was already responsible for many awful films including the Rush Hour series and Red Dragon, but he really out did himself with The Last Stand. The film was just non-stop lurid noise from beginning to end and it's a tiresome, exasperating experience watching the film.

All of Singer's focus on character development is destroyed and the killing off of Cyclops and Professor X was a grossly misjudged decision. The addition of Vinnie Jones was also one of Ratner's unintentionally hilarious decisions and Jones' character has been mockingly quoted ever since. It's impossible to understate just how bad The Last Stand actually is and it's a miracle Vaughn managed to revive the series.
