10 WTF Moments In Film You Won't Believe They Got Away With

8. Questionable Motives?

The Film: Labyrinth So, the Jim Henson endorsed Labyrinth is basically a kids' film: it's inhabited by puppets, and sticks to a fairly traditional fantasy tale with a good suggestion of a moral core and a pretty rigid distinction in who is bad and who is good. In short, it's the kind of film you'd probably happily let your children sit down and watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon, as The Goonies gets its 800th screening on TV. But look again at the main narrative thrust: yes, on the surface of it, the film is a morality tale about not being self-involved, and valuing familial relationships, as David Bowie's Jareth steals Jennifer Connolly's baby brother away to teach her a lesson, but there's something a lot darker in there too. Not content with putting obstacles in her way, Jareth attempts to basically date-rape Sarah (Connolly) by having reluctant cohort Hoggle feed her a drugged apple, and then seducing her. Bearing in mind, she is a teenager. Obviously, this sort of fantastical story invariably explores a loss of innocence, but there is no way a male teenage hero would have been seduced quite so vigorously by a female villain, and you have to wonder quite how this got into such a mainstream kids' movie.
