4. The Valkyrie Scene
The first time this bewitching mystical figure appears is when Amleth is left for dead in the barn as the clan attends the funeral of Thorir. It's unclear as to who the Valkyrie appears for, but nevertheless, she comes out of nowhere, and the intense scene will catch you off guard at first.
The dramatic ascension into the sky takes quite a while and gives the viewer plenty of time to go; WTF is going on here. There's a very angry woman on a horse with long blonde hair and what appears to be braces. The braces actually turned out to be tattoos that Vikings used to do on their teeth by carving symbols into them and filling them with resin. The image of her piercing blue eyes and intimidating stance on the horse with a body draped across its front will burn itself into your brain for quite a while. The moment in the film is terrific but totally unexpected and quite bright amongst the various black and grey filter Eggers tends to use while filming.
