1. Superman Kills Zod - Man of Steel

There has been much talk the last two weeks about the ending of Man of Steel, specifically the scene in which Zod and Superman are in a tussle, and Zod is trying to burn a family to death with his heat vision. Superman has a clearly delineated choice; either kill the only other surviving member of his planet, or let an innocent family be torn to shreds, and with that, Supes decides to violently snap Zod's neck, albeit with a clear reluctance. It's a stirring, potent, shocking scene, and one which caused a lot of debate online, about whether it was right for Zack Snyder to deviate from the prescribed model that Superman never kills. Snyder offered a retort that sending Zod back to the Phantom Zone had been done and wasn't strong enough, whereas the dilemma of the kill suited a utilitarian approach to the character. Moreover, Zod was totally forcing his hand; this was very clearly a "suicide by cop" scenario as Snyder astutely puts it, and so is one of the more daring superhero flourishes on this list that actually, I feel, totally paid off.
