This next X-Men villain has only appeared in a few comics over the years, but his first story line in particular is now heralded as a classic from the infamous Chris Claremont run of the 1970's. Proteus lived with his mother Moira MacTaggert in her mutant research facility on Muir Island. When his reality altering mutant abilities began to surface, Proteus developed an insatiable hunger for energy, forcing Moira to imprison her son in a special cell to simultaneously keep him alive and to stop him becoming a threat to others. Inevitably, Proteus escaped his confines and began to possess people to harness their energy, but this only lasted for a few hours before the host would eventually die. As Moira is close friends with Xavier, the X-Men quickly became involved and tried to stop the young mutant, whose real motivation was simply to find his estranged father. The tragedy behind Proteus's childhood and his feelings of abandonment were captured perfectly in a two-part episode of the animated X-Men series from the early 1990's and a movie could follow a similar trajectory. Visually, the idea of watching the X-Men fight someone who can manipulate reality itself is very exciting as it finally seems like Hollywood's special effects could actually do this justice. What really makes Proteus an awesome choice for a future movie though is his powerful back story, which would require an entire film's focus rather than just a few short scenes among an ensemble of villains.
