10 Zombie Movies That Put A Unique Spin On The Horror Genre
3. Army Of The Dead
A lot of zombie movies can feel a bit goofy and unrealistic at times, whereas others can ground themselves in reality, and offer a grittier look at how a zombie apocalypse would actually play out in real life.
Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead doesn't just lean in to the goofiness, but dives headfirst, which manages to work in its favour. The zombie outbreak has been contained to Las Vegas, which is the perfect setting for the plot.
A group of mercenaries are hired to sneak into the quarantine zone and break into a casino vault to retrieve the riches inside, but of course complications arise.
Army of the Dead is aware of how ridiculous its premise sounds and doesn't shy away from it. It's filled with over-the-top characters, snappy one-liners, and all the double crosses and last-minute rescues you'd expect from a zombie/heist mashup. The zombies themselves also offer a new depth to the genre as there is a clear hierarchy amongst them and they function as an actual army, with a clear leader and the ability to follow orders.
If you still aren't sold, Army of the Dead is worth watching just for the zombie tiger alone.
