Horror flick REC, from Spanish duo Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, was an impressive entry into the often lambasted found footage subgenre. It’s a fast-paced and often terrifyingly taut horror experience, and through sheer originality manages to add a twist to the usual zombie/infection tale.

A reporter and her cameraman travel alongside a couple of local firefighters as they are called to an apartment building where an old woman is trapped. As they enter the building the military seals it off, trapping the group and the residents inside. The building has been quarantined due to an unknown virus which, like rabies, finds the victims becoming aggressive. They attack and bite those around them, spreading the supposed infection.

In such a contained space, it comes as no surprise to see so many of the main group getting attacked throughout the night. And with nowhere to go, Angela, the reporter, and her cameraman Pablo take refuge in the penthouse. There, they discover that the “infection” is a mutated enzyme contagion that resulted from a failed demonic possession of a young girl. The film's final shocking few seconds sees the remaining survivor Angela pulled into the darkness by said possessed girl.
