11 Bizarre Ways Movies Have Been Spoiled

2. The Opening Narration Of Dark City Spoilt The Main Twist

It€™s not too often that a film will spoil a major twist before it€™s even started, but Dark City got a little impatient and spelled out the plot before we€™re even introduced to the main character. As per the title the story is set within a city that€™s particularly dark, and the hero is a man with amnesia being chased for a murder he may - or may not - have committed. Aside from the police he€™s also chased by a group of men called €œThe Strangers€, who have strange abilities and weapons. Part of the mystery is the hero trying to piece everything together, all of which is completely undermined by Kiefer Sutherland's opening narration. It explains that €œThe Strangers€ are aliens, and that the city was designed to run experiments on the human race. The narration was forced on director Alex Proyas by the studio, who felt the movie was too confusing and the plot needed to be spelled out. Although Dark City wasn€™t a big success it gained enough of a following that Proyas was able to assemble a director€™s cut, which restored more character beats and removed the narration. The result is a much better film, and one that restores the actual mystery to what€™s supposed to be a mystery story.
