There are some things in the Wizarding World that are just unacceptable, unforgivable and downright wrong - the creation of an Obscurus is all three of these things and more.

Though the Obscurus is imbued with incredible, explosive power that will keep them from harm; the damage is already done because an Obscurus is generally created as a result of child abuse and oppression. Physical and psychological abuse are the most common causes of an Obscurial forming within a child but things become even worse as every Obscurus has an expiry date.

As confirmed by Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts, it is very uncommon for an Obscurus to live beyond their tenth birthday so they are literally ticking timebombs waiting to die and forever living in fear of unleashing the evil that lives within them.

Granted, the Obscurial is usually of greater threat to those surrounding it but living a life you know will end prematurely is up there with the worst things that can happen to anyone.
