11 Horror Sequels That Were Actually Better Than The Original
6. The Purge: Election Year
The Purge was a bitterly disappointing movie that wasted a great premise, but it performed so well that a sequel was tragically inevitable.
To the pleasant surprise of just about everyone, the first sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, was a striking improvement on the original, although some flaws still remained. The second sequel, The Purge: Election Year, builds on the good work of Anarchy to deliver the best of the franchise so far.
As both a disturbing piece of social commentary and an enormously entertaining thriller, Election Year is an absolute blast that fully realizes the thought-provoking potential the first film wasted so badly. With its brutal, tense thrills, solid cast and clever world-building, Election Year confirmed The Purge as Blumhouse Productions' best franchise property.
The 2018 prequel film, The First Purge, was another good action-horror film, so all the sequels have blown the first film out of the water. While the franchise is doing well, creator James DeMonaco is sensibly quitting while he's ahead and is ending the series with the upcoming 5th film.
