11 Lame Comic Book Movies You Had No Idea Even Existed

9. The Phantom (1996)

zane Chances are you're not that familiar with The Phantom as a comic book character, because Christopher Nolan hasn't made a movie out of him yet, and that's all you people care about these days, isn't it? Anyway, there's a relatively awful movie adaptation of The Phantom if you're interested, courtesy of Simon Wincer, who directed Free Willy, and Jeffrey Boam, who wrote Lethal Weapon 2 and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but also wrote this because€ well, money. Created by Lee Falk in the the 1930s, the Phantom was a costumed crime fighter who lacked superpowers but kicked ass, and operated from a fictional African country called Bangalla. I don't know Lee Falk personally, but I doubt he would have envisioned Billy Zane as the right man to play his most famous creation, given that, hey, it's Billy Zane, and hiring him to star in your movie is like branded it "instantly dated." Still, Zane's not all that terrible in this (his performance in The Phantom was apparently the reason James Cameron cast him in Titantic), though it's not enough to save the movie. As it stands, this is rather forgettable fare, which is probably why it's been entirely forgotten. And don't you dare try to remember it.
