2. Alien: Covenant

The Buzz: Ridley Scott promised that Alien: Covenant would be a return to form after the divisive Prometheus, hewing closer to the Alien mythos and featuring no more dum-dum scientists. With a bunch of flashy trailers and a fantastic cast including Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz and a returning Michael Fassbender, it was easy to believe him.

What We Got: The new Alien movie is basically Prometheus Redux, a visually lavish and thematically intriguing film that's undercut by idiotic characters and an inability to engage with the tantalising questions Prometheus left behind.

A fairly straight-forward horror movie boosted by some gnarly gore and Fassbender's excellent performance, this nevertheless felt like a rather rote retread of the series' greatest hits, and was hardly the major return to form Scott hailed it as.
