11 Most Disgusting Movie Creatures Of All Time

And you thought King Kong was the scariest monster on Skull Island.

Cinema has the power to move and educate, to thrill and to disturb. It also has the power to repulse you with images of slimy, gross creatures and gore, which is what this list is all about.

Some filmmakers take a childish glee in freaking out their audience, and they can do it oh so well. David Cronenberg made his name making films like Shivers and Rabid - which were practically engineered to make an audience squirm - and Eli Roth loves nothing more than adding icky gore to whatever he makes.

Movie monsters come in all shapes and sizes, and part of the fun of designing them is creating something unique and memorable. And the way to do that is to create something truly disgusting. If this ties into the theme of the movie, then all the better, but failing that some filmmakers don’t mind going for pure shock value instead.

Let’s take a look at some of the nastiest creatures ever committed to the big screen, and thank god they don’t exist in real life.

11. Byrus (AKA "S***weasel) - Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher was the sprawling, messy novel Stephen King wrote while recovering from his van accident. It’s not his best work, but it has likeable characters and some memorable scenes. It also has a lot of silliness though, so isn't an obvious candidate for a big budget blockbuster. That didn't stop Warner Bros from trying though.

The result was kind of disastrous and featured a talented cast - including Morgan Freeman and Timothy Olyphant – spouting inane dialogue and fighting wobbly CGI aliens. One of the more unique creatures is called a Byrus, which is an eel-like slug that gestates inside a human stomach before slipping out; it’s cute nickname is a “s***weasel.”

Seeing an alien literally made of crap slithering towards you should be fairly worrying, and making them look appropriately gross was one of the few things the movie got right.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
