The sexual undertones of the Alien franchise aren’t exactly subtle; in fact, they’re literally in your face. When the screenwriters were trying to come up with a unique way for an alien creature to get onboard a spaceship, one of them had the simple - if disturbing - notion of a human character getting "screwed” by a parasite, which lays an alien embryo down his throat.

This brings us neatly to the Facehugger creature. This scurrying little fiend exists to find a fresh host to impregnate, and its design is meant to unsettle. Its mouth is shaped like a vagina, from which hangs a dripping tube, a horrible mash-up of sexual organs.

The unsettling rape imagery of the creature is obvious, which is why the series disturbs on such a primal level; hardly a surprise, given the beasts came from the twisted imagination of designer H.R. Giger.
