9. Dark Phoenix

20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise is one that has seen its highs and lows, and thankfully, with the X-Men roster set to join the MCU, it will soon be put out to pasture for good.

Dark Phoenix was writer/director Simon Kinberg's chance to make amends for the wrongs he had visited upon X-Men fans in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, and in spite of ourselves, we all got a little excited about it.

After all, the last few titles in the X-Men franchise had been an improvement, for the most part; after recasting almost the entire cast and changing up their approach, the output was slightly more palatable, and comic book fans couldn't help but hope to see the Dark Phoenix saga finally given the cinematic treatment it deserves.

The resulting movie was not what they had hoped for. Dark Phoenix's reviews speak for themselves: so scathing that it almost borders on bullying.

After all that X-Men fans have endured since the franchise began in 2000, Dark Phoenix was hardly the ending they deserved, but it was the ending that they should have expected.
