11 Movies Where NOBODY Survives To The End

2. Melancholia

Lars von Trier isn€™t known for making warm, feel good movies but Melancholia €“ which he wrote based on his own intense bouts with depression €“ is something else. The movie makes sure there is no doubt about how things will end; it opens with Earth being destroyed by a rogue planet. The story flashes back to follow a depressed bride as she€™s about to marry a man she doesn€™t even like, and the chaos surrounding their family and the wedding. The rogue planet €“ dubbed Melancholia €“ arrives with perfect timing to disrupt their plans. The bride is so depressed that as everyone around her crumbles about the impending end, she just feels completely numb about it. The movie ends with the bride, her nephew and her sister sitting together in a wooden tepee, where the nephew feels they€™ll be safe from. His plan was complete crap, as the tepee does nothing to stop the planet being destroyed. It says something about von Trier€™s filmography that a movie where the entire human race is wiped out probably ranks as one of his happier endings.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
