11 Predictions For DC’s 2 Mystery Comic Book Movies
4. A New Female-Centric Title/A Harley Quinn Stand-Alone
In light of Wonder Woman's success in Batman v Superman and the inevitable tide of praise that greets Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, Warner Bros would do well to contemplate marketing to the under-nourished female superhero fanbase. It's been a dirty, plainly wrong assumption for too long that nobody wants to see lady heroes on screen (based astonishingly on the failure of Aeon Flux) for too long, and the studio could score a big publicity win by feeding the fans' needs.
The most likely possibilities would be either spinning Harley Quinn off from Suicide Squad (perhaps in a Bonnie & Clyde style caper with her Mr J) - though that would require either Batman or Nightwing to resolve it - or doing something like Birds Of Prey. That all-female Justice League-style group would be perceived as a brave decision by DC, but it could pay dividends.
They've already teased the possibility of Jena Malone playing Barbara Gordon, Katana is in Suicide Squad and there are rumours Black Canary might appear in Justice League. So they could have some of the personnel already in place before 2018.
Probability: 6/10
A stand-alone Harley Quinn movie (or a team up with the Joker) is the more likely of the two, given how hard Warner Bros are probably going to hump on Margot Robbie's appeal, but an all-female superhero ensemble shouldn't be ruled out entirely. If Ghostbusters makes money, consider that point even more pertinent.
Again, the bravery might work against it, but as a "political" choice, it's a powerful one.
