11 Songs That Were Far Better Than The Movies They Were Made For
6. Heathens + Sucker For Pain - Suicide Squad
The build up to the Suicide Squad film could not have been more heightened. The trailer looked great, Margot Robbie was a perfect fit for Harley Quinn, Will Smith looked like he was having a ball and the supporting cast looked great. Jared Leto’s interpretation of the Joker also had us all excited. Enhancing this hype was the use of not one, but two title tracks that not only matched the tone of the trailers but were also damn good songs in their own right.
The first track to be released to promote Suicide Squad was Heathens, a song by Ohio musical duo Twenty One Pilots. The single was a lesser profile song than others on the soundtrack, but managed to punch well above its weight. Gritty, dark, menacing, the song was quite grungy in nature whilst maintaining a catchy chorus. The sound engineering is first rate, making it seem like it was sung by a ten piece band rather than a two hander.
Not to be left behind, the higher profile Sucker for Pain, led by an ensemble of big names, including Imagine Dragons, Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa with further collaborations from no less than ten songwriters, was also a big hit. With so many contributors and musical styles present, the song could easily have been a mess. To the credit of all involved, the song just works.
While each song was supported with strong music videos that encapsulated a dark theme and a clear enough narrative, Suicide Squad the film was just a mess. There were so many edits, so many character introductions, so many scenes that placed style over substance and failed to make any sense that the film quickly fell flat on its face.
