11 Unexpected Actors Who Might Win Oscars Next Year

6. Armie Hammer - Call Me By Your Name

The Role: Oliver, a 24-year-old academic who comes to stay at the villa of a 17-year-old boy's (Timothée Chalamet) parents, only for the two to embark on an intense relationship.

Why He Might Win: The movie has been universally raved-about since its Sundance bow and is incredibly likely to be a major Oscar contender for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor in the very least.

The easy consensus is that Hammer gives easily the best performance of his career here, and most Oscar lists single him out as a front-runner, though it's also worth mentioning that co-star Chalamet could definitely give him some competition here.

Still, the praise is so strong that it's hard not to believe that Hammer will be a strong horse in the race all year round.

Why It's Unexpected: Hammer may have given an excellent dual performance in The Social Network, but his subsequent movie work has been fairly underwhelming for the most part. Many had likely written off his turn in Fincher's movie as a brilliant one-off driven by Aaron Sorkin's electrifying screenplay.

Thankfully Luca Guadagnino's (A Bigger Splash) film is a sumptuous reminder of Hammer's talents that aren't taken advantage of anywhere near enough.
