The dog dies. A lot.

There's nothing quite like a movie that evokes such a strong emotional reaction that you can't help but cry at least a few tears. Filmmakers have been striving to draw this response out of audiences ever since cinema has existed, because when we as viewers can relate to an aspect of the human condition put on-screen, why wouldn't we sob a little?

From good old-fashioned tear-jerkers to more restrained dramas and even a few big-budget tentpoles, if these upcoming movies leave you with dry eyes when the lights go up, they've either gone horrifically wrong somewhere, or more likely you don't have a soul (just kidding).

It's going to get real when these movies hit screens, and whether or not each end product is deemed emotionally manipulative or not, you'll probably end up with a wet face by the end regardless. Let's be honest: you probably think Click is a bit rubbish, but you still cried a lot, right?

Here are 11 upcoming movies that will definitely make you cry...

11. Manchester By The Sea

A Dog S Purpose Birth Of A Nation Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Roadside Attractions/Amazon Studios

The Plot: After the unexpected death of his brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) returns to his hometown where he's given custody of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges) and reconnects with his estranged wife Randi (Michelle Williams).

Why You'll Cry: Early reviews from the festival circuit have called Kenneth Lonergan's (You Can Count On Me, Margaret) latest a devastating masterpiece anchored by a career-best performance from Casey Affleck.

Family drama is always a ripe subject for tears, especially when death is involved, and Lonergan is a master of mature, emotionally shattering drama. Vanity Fair even called the movie "the most artful tearjerker of the year", and going by the rapturous reviews so far, it seems like this'll be a potential Oscar player that is great in spite of making you cry, rather than simply because of it.
