10. A Monster Calls

A Monster Calls
Focus Features

The Plot: A young boy named Conor O'Malley (Lewis MacDougal) attempts to cope with the terminal illness plaguing his mother (Felicity Jones), when one night he's visited by a tree-like monster (Liam Neeson) who helps him begin to make sense of his life.

Why You'll Cry: As if that's not a brutal enough premise, A Monster Calls is based on a 2011 book which sprang from an idea conceived by Siobhan Dowd, who suffered with cancer herself and sadly passed away before she could write the story.

The source novel has been described as emotionally powerful, with the New York Times calling it "profoundly sad", and with a director as talented as J. A. Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) tackling the material, it's extremely likely it will translate supremely well to the big screen.
