Almost half a century after its release, 2001: A Space Odyssey remains one of the best sci-fi films ever made, and this doesn't stop at its story. Visually, the film delivers throughout, from the (admittedly long) opening sequence on prehistoric Earth to the (admittedly confusing) final sequence of the star child. Could it be the first film from its era to get a 3D post-conversion? Possibly. In 2011 the LA Times ran a poll asking readers which classic film they'd like to see converted into the format and, unsurprisingly, 2001: A Space Odyssey won with almost a third of the 760 votes cast*, beating into second-place The Wizard Of Oz by nearly 10%. So there's definitely a 242-person public demand for it, but that doesn't mean it'll happen. No one seems in a hurry to convert old films, but as the 3D process becomes easier, faster and cheaper, this might start to happen, so we can only hope. Only eight votes behind The Wizard Of Oz was an option labelled "None of the above. Keep your hands off my favourite movies." so this could be one reason why old films may never get this treatment, but eventually 3D conversion will become as routine as CGI effects so people may start to do it at home and hopefully we'll get some fan-made 3D version of all the films in this list. And that's probably the only way we'll get the last two... *correct at time of writing.
I'm a British filmmaker (or, at least, trying to be) and about to graduate with a Film Studies degree. Most of the time I should spend working is actually on Netflix so I obviously have loads of life experience to share with you lovely people.
