Putting on weight for a role sounds like a dream. You get paid millions of dollars to stuff your face with whatever you want! Who wouldn't want work like that?
But for George Clooney, gaining 30lbs for the film, Syriana, caused him to experience the worst pain of his entire life. Now, 30lbs doesn't sound like that much. Christian Bale has put on triple that amount on two separate occasions. So why was it such a big deal?
The problem wasn't how much Clooney gained but how quickly he put on the weight. Clooney piled on 30lbs... in a month. 30 days is not enough time for the human body to adjust to such a drastic weight gain.
While filming the torture scene, part of Clooney's spine ruptured, which was caused by his excess bulk. This injury left Clooney bedridden for over a month. He also developed migraines that were so severe, he considered suicide. Thankfully, his back was fixed through surgery. Clooney has since admitted that putting on the weight in such a short space of time was "pretty stupid".
