3. Death By Helicopter Blades - Dawn Of The Dead (1978)
There are so many zombie films about now that further attempts often feel as dead as the subjects. With that in mind, it feels great to revisit a classic from the director responsible for the cornucopia of socially-critical metaphors the genre spawned.
Dawn... relocates the suburban black and white original, Night Of..., to the one place we experience the most insubstantial of modern therapy services, the shopping centre (old school speak for 'mall') wherein the walking dead are 'inexplicably' drawn to.
Multiple zombies kills later and remaining survivors Francine and Peter make a daring rooftop escape via helicopter after the mall comes under siege.
There was, however, a much more downbeat ending in which both commit suicide, with some footage acting as a precursor to those events making it into the final cut. Peter was to blow his brains out with a snub nose pistol (he raises the gun to his head but changes his mind in the final cut) and Fran (this would've been so gnarly) was to put her face in the blades of the helicopter.
The film would've then concluded with the engine of the craft slowly winding down, now out of fuel and giving the impression that, even if they had survived, they would've ended up crashing anyway.
