9. David Brent: Life On The Road
IMDb Rating: 6.5
Ricky Gervais' pursuit of movie stardom never quite worked out, and 2016 feels like his final swing at it. Both of his big projects were major letdowns, though: Foreign Correspondents had a bizarre mix of tones that never settled into a watchable comedy, and David Brent: Life On The Road proved Stephen Merchant had as much to do with the genius of The Office as Gervais.
Life On The Road finds the cringey boss once again pursuing his dreams of music stardom, and while there are a few decent gags it’s a long, long way from the quality writing of the series that spawned it. It’s a shame to bring Brent back after the perfect finale to the show, since a mediocre comedy isn’t the best legacy to leave things on.
The 6.5 rating the film currently holds makes it look agreeable enough, rather than the misfire it is.
