9. The Book Of Henry (6.6)
On paper, The Book of Henry indeed seemed like it was worthy of at least a 6.6 score, or perhaps even much higher. With an all-star cast including Naomi Watts and Jacob Tremblay, not to mention Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow at the helm, this was tipped for possible awards success ahead of its release.
Then people saw it. Oops.
What seemed primed to be a sweet coming-of-age story turned out to be one of the most tonally misguided films of the last decade, bombarding the viewer with several manipulative plot twists, one of which is both unintentionally hilarious and really quite horrifying.
Despite the extensive press surrounding the film's crazy third-act derailment, general audiences still seem quite taken with it.
The Score It Deserves: On a pure entertainment level, the 6.6 feels about right, if you view the film as an accidental comedy. In any serious terms, the fact that the film is a flat-out tonal, emotional and storytelling failure means it should score 3.5 and not a point more.
