12 Best Horror Movies About Demonic Possession

5. Ava’s Possessions

The Exorcist
Orion Pictures

Not all possession movies are sombre affairs. Ava’s Possessions starts its narrative where most possession movies end theirs, after the successful exorcism of the demon. This movie asks the question, what happens when the demon packs his bags and your priest follows him out the door. Well, wackiness ensues.

In the world of Ava’s Possessions, demonic possession is commonplace and accepted by society, a little like alcoholism. To add to the general inconvenience of having been possessed for twenty-eight days, Ava must now piece together her month-long bender while attending rehab, facing legal proceedings, finding a new job, and figuring out if she’s killed someone. All while trying not to become possessed again (which is a thing in this universe).

There’s a stellar supporting cast, it’s always a pleasure to see genre favourites Carol Kane of Transylvania 6-5000, The Princess Bride and Scrooged. As well as, William Sadler of Die Hard 2, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Roswell and Star Trek Deep Space 9.

The movie starts at the end and goes in a completely new and refreshing direction. Under its attention-grabbing colour palate, possession is grounded in mundane reality and we see the hilarious consequences of demonic possession when real life is thrown into the mix.

Through this inspired lens, we see the world of possessions in an all-new neon light.
