Peter Jackson was the first to introduce the technique as his Hobbit trilogy was simultaneously projected at 24 (the normal speed) and 48 frames per second, depending on the screening. Gemini Man director Ang Lee has dabbled with the technology before, as Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk was shot at 120 fps but only screened in a few cinemas, as most weren’t equipped with the resources to project it.

THR reports that Gemini Man will have Will Smith star as an older Hitman (50) who must find and murder his younger self (23). Smith said the film is, “really insane, but with guidance and collaboration with Ang Lee, we have done something that has never been done before."

Audiences will have the choice to either watch the film in 2D, 3D, 2D at 120 fps, or 3D at 60 fps. THR’s sources say there is test footage available for theatres and the ball is now in their court as to if they want to equip a few theatres with the necessary technology. 24, 60, or 120 fps aside, two Will Smiths and the visual director of Life of Pi making a film is more than enough to get butts in seats.

Gemini man will be coming out on October 11, 2019.

If you talk in a theatre I'm in, be prepared to get some pretty passive aggressive stares.
