12 Biggest Reveals We Learned From CinemaCon 2019
1. The Nightmare That Is Netflix
Netflix and movie theatre owners are about as good of friends as orange juice and toothpaste. Netflix is now a part of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) but that hasn’t stopped them from being at odds with theatres.
Netflix demands their films be released in theatres the day they’re released on the streaming platform - something that doesn’t sit well with cinema owners who have a strict hold on theatrical releases to not be made available at home within 90 days.
THR describes that Helen Mirren, of all people, was one of the only people to appear on stage to name the streaming service. “I love Netflix, but f**k Netflix.” The crowd applauded unanimously as she added, “"There’s nothing like sitting in the cinema and the lights go down. I would like to thank you guys for making that environment possible."
John Fithian of NATO (National Association of Theatre Owners) reportedly from Variety,“Scolded press for their interest in streaming, disappointed that the record box office was not bigger point of discussion.”
The debate is surely to continue, and with passion that would bring the 73-year-old Dame Mirren to voice such a harsh/profane opinion.
